Brief history of the Faculty

The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FOSE) has evolved considerably over the past decade and now has the following Departments; Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science & Planning (GEP), Mathematics, and Physics. With the exception of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department and partially including the Department of Computer Science, all Departments teach undergraduate degrees that lead to the four-year degree of Bachelor of Science. The five-year B.Eng. programme and other direct programmes housed in the Computer Science department reflect the Faculty’s intention to widen the Science and Technology base in the country. The B.Sc. degree programme has been producing experts such as but not limited to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teachers, Engineers, Researchers, Consultants, Analysts, Scientists and Managers in the STEM field

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is offering the undergraduate programmes: Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronic), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Education Bachelor of Science in Information Science Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science. In addition to the undergraduate programmes, the faculty also offers postgraduate programmes namely; Master of Science in Chemistry, Master of Science in Environmental Resources Management, and Master of Science in Mathematics (with an option in Mathematical Modelling, Mathematical Finance and Pure Mathematics).

The mission of the Faculty of Science and Engineering is to be a strong and outstanding centre for the teaching, development and promotion of science, technology and innovation to support the sustainable economic development of society, striving always for relevance in teaching and research, and excellence among staff and students. The Faculty pursues broad interests, bringing together a range of expertise with a focus on human resource development, research in the natural and physical sciences, information technology and engineering, as well as focus on the conservation of natural resources and the integration of environmental issue



Objectives

The objectives of the Faculty of Science and Engineering are to:

  • Promote and optimise the role of science and technology in national growth and development;
  • Produce skilled and competent manpower capable of independent thinking and creativity;
  • Achive the heighest academic standards among staff and students;
  • Promote the development of post-graduate studies in all areas of focus in the Faculty;
  • Promote research based teaching and learning ;
  • Promote the exchange of information with society;
  • Promote/enhence interdisciplinary co-operation in teaching and research;
  • Promote partnership/collaboration between the Faculty, nation and international institutions, agencies and individuals interested in the advancement of science education, the utilization of technology and the conservation and sustainable utilisation of natural resources;
  • Expand and improve the infrastructure and facilities in the faculty, for effective teaching and research;
  • Improve gender balance in the faculty; and
  • Ensure that the enviroment is safe and healthy for teaching and learning.
