On Thursday,16 April 2026, the Faculty of Science and Engineering hosted a memorable and uplifting 5th CISCO-Certified Network Associate (CNNA) graduation ceremony at the New Wing, celebrating a new cohort of graduates equipped to thrive in the digital era. The event brought together lectures, instructors, Head of Departments, Dean of Faculties, industry partners and proud families in a shared moment of achievement and optimism. Held in a vibrant and dignified setting, the ceremony recognized graduates who successfully completed the demanding CISCO programme. The presence of senior university leadership and representatives from industry underscored the importance of the initiative in advancing both education and national development.
Delivering the keynote address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Thwala commended the graduates for their resilience and commitment to excellence. Thwala said "I challenge the faculty to expand and come up with more similar programs that will grow to include other areas of engineering". This graduation ceremony was a demonstration of what is possible when dedication meets opportunity. He further emphasized the critical role of digital skills in today's world, noting that the rapid pace of technological advancement requires institutions to continuously adapt and invest in relevant training programs.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Thwala highlighted the importance of the collaboration, noting that the university has a responsibility to contribute knowledge that leads to sustainable solutions and that the partnership of this nature will strengthen its ability to respond to national and regional challenges. Thwala pointed out that the partnership will enable breakthroughs in modelling and monitoring water quality, while also supporting the application of scientific tools to better understand and manage aquatic ecosystems. Emphasizing the scale of the initiative, the Vice Chancellor described it as a reminder that while water management requires strong technical expertise, it is equally about human responsibility, in ensuring sustainable use of resources. He said the true value of the MOU lies not only in its signing but in the tangible outcomes and actions that will follow, particularly in empowering both students and the faculty. He also extended his appreciation to the Faculty of Science and Engineering, as well as the Faculty of Social Science, for their strong leadership and instrumental role in facilitating the partnership.
The CISCO Network Academy programme through collaboration with Eswatini Post and Telecommunications Corporation has proven to be a powerful platform for bridging the gap between theory and practice. Graduates completed intensive training across four cohorts between 2024 and 2025, gaining hands-on experience in network fundamentals, enterprise networking, cyber security and automation. Speaking at the ceremony, EPTC managing director, Fulatsa Sibanyoni, highlighted the value of institutional partnerships in strengthening education and empowering professionals. The collaboration with the University which began in 2017 is still rooted in equipping students with skills that are not only relevant but transformative. She said these graduates are stepping into a world that demands innovation, adaptability and ethical leadership. Sibanyoni is confident that the graduates will rise to the occasion and make meaningful contributions to the digital economy. She also noted that the programme continues to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of both the institution and its graduates in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The ceremony also paid tribute to instructors, whose dedications and unwavering support were instrumental in guiding students through the program. Their commitment to excellence and mentorship was recognized as a cornerstone of the graduates' success. Representing the students, Nkhosinathi Vilakati delivered an emotional and inspiring speech that captured the spirit of the journey. He said there were moments when the journey felt overwhelming-late nights, difficult concepts, and constant pressure, but through the support of lectures and peers they pushed through. Today the students stand proud, not just for completing the journey but for who they have become along the way. Vilakati also expressed gratitude to families and instructors, acknowledging their role in providing encouragement and strength throughout the journey.
Graduates were reminded that their accomplishment carries a responsibility to apply their knowledge with integrity, to embrace innovation and to contribute to the development of their communities. They were encouraged to become ambassadors of professionalism and to mentor others who aspire to follow similar paths.
Looking ahead, the Faculty of Science and Engineering reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its academic offerings in emerging technological fields. Plans are in place to introduce advanced programmes, including specialised certifications in cyber security and networking, ensuring that students remain competitive in the global digital landscape. The ceremony concluded on a high note with applause and celebration marking not just the end of an academic journey but the beginning of new opportunities. The graduates, now equipped with valuable skills and knowledge, are set to play a pivotal role in shaping a more connected and innovative future.
As the celebration came to a close, the sense of pride in the room was unmistakeable. Smiles, applauses and quite moments of reflection captured the significance of the day. The future of Artificial Intelligence is in capable hands.
